McHale Completes Ethanol Facility Testing
SAMMAMISH, WA, JULY 7, 2006 - McHale & Associates, Inc., a company specializing in Power Plant Performance, recently conducted acceptance testing at a new Ethanol Production facility. McHale's knowledge of Performance Test Codes was used to develop customized test procedures for the facility and execute testing . Ethanol production equipment is currently addressed by ASTM Standard E869, Performance Evaluation of Fuel Ethanol Manufacturing Facilities which outlines a testing approach. McHale applied testing techniques taken from years of experience with ASME Performance Test Codes and applied the methods to Ethanol testing. Using attention to responsibilities, timing, instrumentation, and calculation methods allowed an understanding of the test approach before testing started.
The procedures developed allowed the test parties to understand the objectives of testing, and provided a measurable result for comparison with contractual guarantees. The testing included measurement of Production Rate, Conversion Efficiency, and Energy for Conversion. Using methods normally applied to power plant testing improved accuracy of the test measurements and reduced the test uncertainty.
As more Ethanol facilities come on line and there is substantial financial risk, there will be increased attention to the accuracy and methods of testing. "Third party verification of testing facilities will become more valuable to owners, constructors, and process suppliers to ensure high quality results and avoid disputes." said Mike McHale, Vice President.
